Higher gauge = thinner wire. It runs opposite to most measurements: a 22 AWG wire is thinner than a 12 AWG wire, not thicker. In a US home, 14 AWG (white sheathing) and 12 AWG (yellow sheathing) are the two gauges you'll actually run into behind the walls.
