Also called standard form. Converts without silently dropping the trailing zeros you actually typed, which is a genuine precision loss if it happens without telling you.

This is the same rule the significant figures calculator uses: without a decimal point, trailing zeros are just placeholders for the number's size, not confirmed measured digits, so they're dropped when converting to scientific notation. The reverse case matters too - typing "4.50" and asking for scientific notation should keep all three significant figures, giving "4.50 × 10⁰", not "4.5 × 10⁰". This tool works from the digits you actually typed, not a rounded-off floating-point copy of them, so that third figure isn't lost.
Scientific notation exists specifically to remove the ambiguity plain numbers have - writing 1.23 × 10⁵ instead of 123000 makes it unambiguous that only 3 digits were actually measured, not 6.
